Things to Do in New Albany, MS

One of the more idyllic and beautiful cities of Mississippi, New Albany is the county seat of Union County. It was named after Albany, NY, due to some original settlers coming from that town.

It was founded in 1840 along the Tallahatchie River near two trade trails at the grist mill and sawmill site. It was developed originally as a riverport and then as a regional center for commerce and agriculture. Confederate troops nearly destroyed a local bridge during the American Civil War, but Union soldiers stopped them.

If you’re looking for cool things to do in New Albany, look no further than the Park Along the River and Mississippi Arboretum, which features trees both local and new to the area of huge diversity. It is a natural place kept well-preserved, with multiple trails and places to hike and enjoy the natural waterway. A similar place is the Tanglefoot Trail, a great place to go hiking. The Union County Heritage Museum features a look back into the area’s geologic, cultural, and natural history, including blues musicians from the area.
