Things to Do in Shannon, MS

One of the great cities of Lee County, MS, Shannon is located right along the Mississippi Highway 145 just west of U.S. Route 45. It has a notable local creek, Chiwapa Creek, flowing south of it.
The town was named for Samuel Shannon, one of the key people who purchased land at that location in the early 1800s. He built a cabin and a farm that attracted more settlers to the area, especially after the Treaty of Pontotoc. Strawberry plants were relocated from here to Plant City, FL, causing a multimillion-dollar industry to grow in Plant City. The town was officially incorporated in 1860, and a post office was established.
The area is known for balloon rides, with America Hot Air Balloon being the place to visit to get a ride above the gorgeous Mississippi landscape. The specialty gift shop Reed’s has movie posters that go back in time, as well as rock ‘n roll posters and other essential pieces of American media history. Local cemeteries are the place to visit if you want to go and see pieces of Mississippi history; many local groundskeepers are very informed about the region’s history.
